MEDAIA DESIGN | Sound wave based materials and landscapes
Abstract
The workshop focuses on developing modular and unitized multilayer acoustic panels and landscapes. It explores sound wave geometries over time aided by Rhinoceros® and the Grasshopper® plug-in and Kangaroo Physics component. Working prototypes are be fabricated on 3-axis milling machines or 3D printers.
Theme
Acoustic environments vary greatly and our ability to describe their properties and shapes appears limited. We shall develop methods to visualize, reveal and explore the patterns of sound waves using digital tools and dynamic models. The potential of discovering new spatial constructs and organizations based on sound waves could lead to new architectural elements and acoustic landscapes.
Digital design tools such as the Rhinoceros® Grasshopper® plug-in and the Kangaroo Physics component enables us to work in a time based environment and to visual the complexities inherent to wave geometries and mechanics. With these tools we will learn to control and tune specific wave frequencies and develop physical prototype adapted to them using digital fabrication and rapid prototyping technologies such as CNC mills and 3D printers.
This project is a design workshop for Bachelor, Master and Dipl. students.
