ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN | Bachelor Design Project | EXPO2021 Pavilion Transformation
MVRDV's Dutch Pavilion for the Expo 2000 in Hannover Germany became the iconic building of the event and pushed the office's reputation worldwide. Being abandoned for over 20 years the structure and all its glory and conceptual spaces decayed and is now more a reminiscence of a time when architects took the chance to dream about a brighter future and leaped for mind-bending concepts.
The pavilion's stacked structure is transformed into a design school with exhibition spaces, gathering options, student studios, lecture halls, as well as a public roof and garden level. The concept tries to preserve the iconic stacked levels while simultaneously adding bold new tectonic elements, cutting through existing elements, and carefully introducing new spatial uses.
By giving new meaning to the tower and adding creative functions, the project wants to wake up the former lighthouse project from its twenty-year insomnia.
