ROBOTIC DESIGN LAB | In-Space _Transforming data into spatial models

The processing and integration of valuable data within the workflow of architects is being increasingly applied in the digital age. This strategy employs critical organization and interpretation along with the translation of data structures. It becomes central to understand data employed by the design model as something generated as part of the design project rather than being predefined.

The objective of the seminar is to study the capability of additive fabrication methods and parametric design in the context of architectural designs. Established data sets will be used as a source to investigate translations into spacial structures. The robot arm will link the evaluated data sets with consequently placed material as an advanced fabrication tool in the three-dimensional space. These data sets can be from a variety of sources. For instance a melody could be organized in frequency and harmony and then translated into data structures. In a similar approach graphics could be used by transforming color indices into numeric spatial systems.

Students are asked to develop frameworks for the transformation of sourced numeric data into varieties of spacial interpretations.
