ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN | Frankfurt high-rise

The project deals with the building type of the building as a social, formal and constructive phenomenon. In experimental ways, strategies for the vertical shape, concepts of spatial and functional compression, and ideas of the "Auto Monuments" and the "city within a city" are to be investigated. Basis of the discussion is the idea of changing, adapting to the needs of users of the city and programmatic compression in very large buildings, which the Netherland architect Rem Koolhaas formulated in his early theoretical work "Delirious New York. A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan" in 1978. With the concept of "Culture of Congestion" he describes the phenomenon of simultaneity and spatial superposition of different programs, functions, concepts and ideologies as well as the help of modern technologies in generating directed artificial worlds.

To be tested will be the concept of the unpredictable and unstable combination of simultaneous activities in a high-rise design for Frankfurt am Main. Amidst the financial crisis, the City of Frankfurt continues the planning for the construction of additional high-rise buildings. More than 20 new towers are possible with the new skyscraper development, which the City Council decided at the end of 2008. The task of the project is to design a 210 meters high skyscraper, which will emerge on a previously undeveloped property south of the main station in Frankfurt am Main. Here are all the major traffic connections from city public transport to regional and long-distance high-speed trains. The plan is for a spatial and functional connection between the tower, station, tracks and a new bus station.

The skyscraper is a building that allows unaccustomed perception forms of space. Spatial categories such as top and bottom, inside and outside, near and far receive a far greater scale in a high-rise. The enlargement of the horizon with increasing altitude is just as characteristic as the change from the view of the building to the oversight of the urban surroundings. These specific forms of perception and spatial effects on the viewer will be discussed in relation to the specific planned location of the high-rise.

The project is in cooperation with the Institute of Steel Construction, Technical University of Brunswick and the laboratory for processing technology, HAWK Hildesheim. As design and materialization media, a 2D laser cutting machine, a 3D printer, CNC Styroschneidemaschine and a CNC 5-axis milling cutter will be used.
